An amazing and disturbing feature of the past 250 years of human history is the Great Divergence – the emergence of huge disparities in income levels between countries. In this talk Jeff will give an introduction to the main forces that economic historians and development economists use to explain why countries are rich and poor, including technology, geography and institutions. He will also explore what this approach suggests are the right ways to assist developing countries.
